A Few Common Nutrition Myths and Misconceptions

Millions of people across the globe struggle with weight gain and all the social and medical issues that come with the extra pounds. Most of people are willing to shed off the excess pounds, but one of their biggest challenges that gets in the way is the lack of reliable information.

There is plenty of information out there on everything to do with nutrition and weight gain. But, the greatest shortcoming is that most of the information is not factual. And so with all these misconceptions and myths it is not always easy to get reliable information to help with your weight loss.

Myth #1 - Starvation is necessary for weight loss

This myth might be correct to some extent since the body will have to use the stored fats to compensate for the shortage in calorie intake. But, the health implications of this might be severe, and most research findings over the years prove that this is a rather wrong move. Nutritionists and health experts warn that women should never take anything less than 1200 calories a day while men should never go below 1800.

Myth #2 - Eggs are unhealthy

Most weight loss programs have a way of demonizing some types of foods and eggs are one of those that suffer most. Whereas some believe that eggs have very high cholesterol content that is bad for your heart, for others it is the kind of food that will make you gain weight fast. However, this is just a myth because eggs mostly contain the so-called good cholesterol and no scientific evidence links them to increased risks of heart diseases if consumed in moderation. However, the American Heart Association recommends that you should keep your consumption to one egg a day.

Myth #3 - You must completely eliminate certain food groups to lose weight

Some diet plans will recommend the elimination of a particular food group and focusing on a couple of the others. It might work on some rare occasions but for your body to be healthy you will need a diet that comprises of foods from all the groups. Everything, from vitamins to carbs and proteins, is essential for a healthy immune system and totally cutting out any of these foods may affect your body adversely.

Myth #4 - Carbohydrates are fattening

Contrary to popular belief, nothing is fattening about carbs. This myth has been there for many decades and research over the years proves that there is nothing factual in it. The Diet Revolution, a nutrition book from 1972 by Dr. Atkins is one of the most detailed research works that disputes this claim. Most other studies that have come out in recent years also confirm that there is no relationship between weight gain and eating carbs.
